So you want to repurpose your content from Medium to your blog?

I get it. You’ve put hours into crafting thoughtful stories on Medium, and now they’re just… sitting there. Meanwhile, your blog needs fresh content.

You’re wondering if it’s worth the effort to repurpose those Medium stories. Whether your audience will respond to the same content on a different platform. If the SEO benefits are real.

And deep down, you’re worried: will Google penalize you for duplicate content?

Why you should repurpose from Medium to your blog

Here’s the truth: you never really know what kind of content is going to resonate better on which platform until you try.

Back in 2020, I created a series of YouTube videos about note-taking. The views were decent, but nothing spectacular. On a whim, I decided to repurpose that content into Medium stories.

The result? Those repurposed articles went viral on Medium, helped me add 3,000 email subscribers to my list, and ultimately led to a 5-figure course launch in just 12 weeks.

This difference isn’t random. It happens because of various factors:

  • Different audiences frequent different platforms
  • Algorithms favor different content styles
  • Timing and trending topics vary by platform
  • Some ideas simply work better in certain formats

The main differences between Medium and your blog

Medium is a centralized content platform with its own built-in audience and distribution system. When you publish on Medium, you’re tapping into their ecosystem and playing by their rules.

Your blog, on the other hand, is YOUR platform. You control everything – from design to monetization to how you collect email addresses.

Here are the key differences:

Medium:

  • Built-in audience discovery through tags and publications
  • Revenue based on member reading time
  • Limited customization and design options
  • Restricted call-to-actions and monetization options
  • Strong internal distribution for quality content

Your Blog:

  • Complete control over design and user experience
  • Full ownership of monetization (ads, affiliates, products)
  • Unlimited call-to-action options
  • SEO benefits that build long-term traffic
  • No algorithm changes can suddenly tank your reach

Why you should post on your blog

Your blog is digital real estate you actually own. While Medium can change its algorithm or business model overnight, your blog remains yours.

With your blog, you can:

  • Build domain authority over time
  • Create content that ranks for specific keywords
  • Customize your funnel to capture leads effectively
  • Test different monetization methods without restrictions
  • Build a brand that’s entirely under your control

What makes good blog content

Good blog content differs from good Medium content in several important ways:

1. Stronger SEO focus: Your blog posts should target specific keywords and follow SEO best practices that might feel unnatural on Medium.

2. More comprehensive coverage: While Medium rewards concise, focused stories, blog posts can (and often should) be more comprehensive, covering topics in greater depth.

3. Strategic internal linking: Effective blog posts connect to other relevant content on your site, creating a web of value for both readers and search engines.

4. Custom formatting: Use subheadings, bullet points, tables, and other formatting elements that might not display optimally on Medium.

For example, a Medium story about “5 Productivity Tips” might become a comprehensive blog post on “The Ultimate Guide to Productivity for Knowledge Workers,” with expanded sections, case studies, and links to related content on your site.

Build Your Swipe File Of Winning Blog Content

The best way to create winning blog content is to study what’s already performing well. Each platform has its own unwritten rules, and you need to understand the specific elements that make blog posts successful.

Look for newer bloggers who are getting significant traction. The established gurus can often break the rules because they already have an audience. New bloggers who succeed quickly are usually following the current best practices.

Pay attention to:

  • Title patterns and structures
  • Introduction techniques
  • Content organization
  • Call-to-action approaches
  • Image usage and formatting

PRO TIP: Focus on bloggers in your niche who started within the last 1-2 years but are already ranking well. Their success is more likely replicable than someone who built their blog a decade ago.

Set up an automation to turn Medium stories to blog posts

Okay, so now that you’ve have these laid out…

You could either do this manually like a monkey.

Hire a VA that you need to train for weeks on Fiverr…

Or (my favorite way):

You could use AI and automation tools to make this process as smooth as butter.

Here’s an example:

As soon as you publish on Medium, an automation could extract that content, reformat it for your blog, and prepare it for publishing with proper SEO elements.

Tools like n8n, Make (formerly Integromat), or Zapier can help create these workflows. Here’s a simple example:

1. When a new Medium story is published (trigger)

2. Extract content using the Medium API or RSS feed

3. Pass the content through an AI prompt to optimize for blog format:

“Transform this Medium article into an SEO-optimized blog post. Expand sections that need more detail, add appropriate H2 and H3 headings, suggest internal linking opportunities, and optimize for the keyword [KEYWORD]. Keep the original voice and examples but adjust formatting for web readability.”

4. Send the reformatted content to your WordPress draft folder or content management system

5. Notify you to review before publishing

This simple automation can save you hours of repetitive work and ensure consistency in how you repurpose content.

Stop letting your brilliant Medium stories go to waste. Your blog is hungry for that content—just give it a little makeover first.
